Today I got confirmation from Judge Klein that I would be allowed to leave my judicial clerkship with him early to go study abroad at the University of Witwatersrand, which as many of you already know is in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA). I immediately emailed Sumudu Atapattu (she in charge of all us study abroaders) to say I accept and ... well here goes! There is another UW student going with me. She is a 2L and I don't know her ... yet!

Next I have to complete an application, which I think (hope) is more of a formality than anything, for the University in SA. Once they give me final approval I'll apply for my visa with the SA embassy and meet with Professor Klug about housing and selecting classes! Over there I can take LLM classes (which we can't here unless we're actually LLM students) and take classes like "Street Law" which is basically a clinical where students go all over the place (including into neighborhoods and prisons) to do legal aid and learn the law. The school also has the Bram Fisher Foundation and the Mandela Institute - human rights and economic focuses respectively (I know I thought it would be the other way around too) - which host many important lecturers on the subjects and promote research and collaboration.

There's still so much to do like talking to a travel agent and booking a flight, registering my trip with the U.S. Department of State (embassy consulate need to know where i'm going and why just in case anything goes wrong - the good news is that the U.S. Embassy in SA is just a very short train ride away in Pretoria so no worries if all hell breaks loose I'll be good), getting vaccines and malaria pill prescription, start moving my stuff home to be in storage, talk to my bank about exchange rates and using my debit card etc, ... there's like 50 more things but it's gonna be ahhhhmazing as Rachel would say :) sigh - I'm gonna miss everybody A LOT though ... so here's the blog in it's beginnings you can check on what I'm doing and where I'm going and I'll upload pictures as much as possible, and also the really important part ... YOU GUYS HAFTA WRITE TO ME! I don't want to be completely out of the loop when I come home, also send me pictures too - ESPECIALLY of the football games!
